What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals that were commonly used in construction throughout the 20th Century. Following the realisation that the fibres asbestos releases are an extreme health hazard, it was fully banned in the UK in 1999. Even now, it remains one of the most prevalent causes of workplace deaths in the UK, with over 5000 deaths due to asbestos-related disease per year.

Requirements

You must have a full survey (and, if needed, asbestos removal) conducted by a competent surveyor or contractor. It is extremely important to factor in a realistic amount of time for this. Asbestos removal is covered by specific regulations: there is a strict 14-day notice period (applies to notifiable forms of asbestos) to the HSE before works can take place.
